Correlations between gender ratio and urban road safety indicators. The scatter plots show the correlations between two urban road safety indicators and the gender ratio \(\sigma _{c}\), for cities in the four geographical areas separately. For each area, outliers to the three distributions of \(\sigma _{c}\), \(\mathit{bike}\ \mathit{lanes}\) and \(\mathit{speed}\ \mathit{limit}\) were identified using the IQR Score method [26] and excluded. Each data point represents a city. The black line is the linear fit. The two urban road safety indicators capture the density of streets with a cycle lane in the street network (indicator: \(\mathit{bike}\ \mathit{lanes}\)) and the density of streets with a speed limit up to 20 mi/h or 30 km/h in the street network (indicator: \(\mathit{speed}\ \mathit{limit}\)).
