Model complexity for pendigits: the competing model here is a DT and the decision to upgrade the complexity to that of a CSDT relies on how much it costs to make the switch. In this case, as long as the cost is lower than the baseline (naive model, shown using the broken pink line), and below the competing model (shown using the starred black continuous line), it is feasible to use a CSDT.
