Boundary node detection over time from real time monitoring of events in the ’Got to Dance’ Twitter discussion. The Twitter activity of a TV show is monitored and the Tweets are gathered. The first subplot shows the number of boundary nodes that produce a Tweet, and in the second subplot is shown the number of Tweets from a random set of nodes of equal size to the boundary node set taken from this Twitter network. In the bottom plot is the total volume of Tweets over time, and we see a time frame of intense conversation activity. The dashed lines in black are a threshold for the number of Tweets in a minute that are considered to be a spike and is a standard deviation above the mean Tweet count. The boundary nodes as well as the rest of the network are taking part in the conversation with the ability for information exchange between communities.
